I used to have the video single of Attack by Bomb The Bass on VHS years ago, and lost it in the mists of time. I was very sad about this, it was what got me into skate videos and the like. Finally a few days ago I found this on youtube (I will admit to an issue of middle age that meant I couldn’t remember what it was called, which didn’t help with my quest). Watch and enjoy.

Models of Communication
I had an interesting conversation this week with socialistgamer at oxtuttle about voice comms within games. It reminded me of my old communication studies A-level course many years ago, and of the classic formal models for communication. I promised to try and track them down, as they were very hazy memories, so here they are. These examples are all drawn from SHKaminski.com, who has made some useful notes on them, so I’m just providing links rather than using their diagrams.
The Shannon-Weaver Mathematical model from 1949 portrays a linear model of a single object of communication, showing the factors involved along the way. It nicely incorporates the concept of noise along the path of the message from sender to receiver, the factors that surround the message but are not part of what is intended to be sent.
Schramm’s Model of Communication from 1954 shows a more circular model of communication, with messages being sent between two sources at the same time. This is perhaps a more accurate model of the process, as in a conversation between two people, there often isn’t a clear back and forth, sometimes they will talk over each other, and throughout they will be sending messages via non-verbal communication, showing interest with their eyes for instance.
Both are basic classic models of the process, and indeed there are many more recent and complex models to explore. However I think they are both useful to remember when considering the process of communicating in areas such as gaming and social networks as a starting point. We were discussing the difficulties in playing multiplayer games when this thought came up, how in some cases playing at a LAN party was easier than playing online from your own home, and in some cases more difficult. The noise factors at a LAN party might be for one obviously more noise, more distractions from being in a room with several other people, playing in an unfamiliar place compared to your normal location. However also being able to see and speak in person to people, rather than through microphones and text chat, can make communication easier, reduce noise.
Similarly, noise can affect how a message may be received on say Twitter. How many people are each of your audience following, are you one of a few, very likely to be read, or are you one of many hundreds or thousands, part of a vast stream of information. Is the network solid, will your audience receive all your tweets, or is the network prone to going down, meaning they may miss it entirely even if they want to read it. Have you annoyed people with a lot of silly or spam messages, are they likely to ignore even a good useful message because of other things you’ve said previously? These and a multitude of other factors all can act as noise surrounding every single tweet you send.
Although both these models are over 50 years old now, they are still nice simple models to apply to communication to see how it works, and where the potential pitfalls lie.

Scalextric Obsession

I’m building a nice little obsession with Scalextric at the moment. Decided that I needed a set for my birthday last year, and have enjoyed that so far, but since the end of the last F1 season, I think I felt I was missing the racing, so to fill the void I started building up my collection somewhat. Now have a few NASCARs, F1 cars, old Ferraris, and just any cars that take my fancy. NASCAR and F1 are my favourite ones at the moment, will probably concentrate on building up my sets of those.
I’ve started making plans, scary plans, ones that might involve solder, painting and woodwork. All things I will confess are not high on my greatest talents list at the moment. I’ve looked into what other people have done, and there are some scary/brilliant tracks out there. I’m not intending to come close to that at all, but I will have a go at making something nice. Couple of thoughts at the moment, one is to build a NASCAR oval, the other is to make something with a few more turns. Something to be said for both ideas, but I think the best bet is to aim for something manageable.
I must go, I’ve got to check on the price of a sidecar on Ebay…

Isolating and treating the Slacker gene
Here at Flotsky Inc we take great pride in our research into many areas, not least in the world of genetics. After many years of research we feel ready to announce our discovery of the Slacker gene. There are a few characteristics in the human gene code that seem to stem from it, and understanding of those elements do seem to help with the treatment of it. Please be aware, many of those in possession of said gene will not have got this far into the paragraph, so please feel free to explain these treatments to those you suspect need help.
Intelligence and Ego
Undoubtably, there is a link between these two elements for those that are imbued with the Slacker gene. Even if they seem lacking in ego, in their minds they ultimately know they are right about most things. The process works thus:
I am told I should do this
However, even though this seems on the surface sensible, I know it isn’t worth doing
Therefore I won’t do itThis takes a highly developed subconscious belief in the quality of one’s intelligence, even if they themselves don’t believe they are. Luckily the treatment for this is simple, and involves knowing this process. One simply injects another stage of logic:
I am told I should do this
However, even though this seems on the surface sensible, I know it isn’t worth doing
However, I know that this is my ego talking, and I’m actually more intelligent than that, than even my ego believes
Therefore I will prove this extra level of intelligence and do itSimple application of this new level, with vigour where appropriate, can help counteract the highly developed intelligence and ego partnership.
Magpie Syndrome
This is a side-effect of the slacker gene, and is one of its most debilitating problems. Like the magpie, one is always distracted by the shiny things. Whether it is a television programme, following Twitter, checking ones email repeatedly, or many other things, one reasons that the shiny thing nearby is more important than the task in hand. The trick here is, almost literally, blinkers. Shut off all distractions. Move away from them if need be. Make one’s focus the task itself, and fight to keep on task. This can be a battle of wills, trickery and treatery can help too, aiming for a time, a word count, often with the possibility of a small reward, a cup of tea, a brief break. The skill is to make the reward small and under-distracting.
Anxiety
Anxiousness may not seem the most obvious part of what makes a slacker, but it is undoubtedly there under the surface bubbling away. What may seem like laziness and stasis, may actually be the fault of anxiety and self-doubt over making an action. Sufferers find a multitude of reasons to not do something, to avoid, in order that they may feel safe in the cocoon they have created to shield them.
To overcome this, the best course of action is to recognise the intelligence previously mentioned, use that aligned with the ego to disprove all the fears that are used as excuse. Remember that quality of thought as proof to counteract them, remove them one by one until stasis can be beaten.
These simple methods can prove useful in fighting the effects of the Slacker gene, should you feel you may too be a sufferer like me, try them!

frylift – Basically Stephen Fry stuck in a lift
Have had a little fun tonight following @StephenFry on Twitter. Following this tweet:
Ok. This is now mad. I am stuck in a lift on the 26th floor of Centre Point. Hell’s teeth. We could be here for hours. Arse, poo and widdle
— Stephen Fry (@stephenfry) February 3, 2009
he posted a picture of his predicament to Twitpic:
There then followed a deluge of tweets with the hashtag of #frylift, and even some cash-in merchandise:
Okay that was me. My favourite was from Father Ted co-creator Graham Lineham who called for help:
Help! I’m stuck halfway up the stairs!
— Graham Linehan (@Glinner) February 3, 2009
and also provided a photo:
Happily both Stephen and Graham were rescued and are now safe. This should say something about Twitter, given the numbers of posts and views involved, but I think more than anything it says it is a load of wonderful silly nonsense at times.

Google Chrome on Mac OSX (almost)
Google have confirmed today that they’re aiming to have Mac OSX and Linux versions of their Google Chrome browser ready for release by the middle of 2009. In the meantime, it may be possible to build a version to try out from source. According to the current advisory, they aren’t even working on the user interface yet, so it may not be that functional, but if you like playing with source code (at your own risk, of course), have a look:

Todos – Mac app that will show you everything
I was pointed in the direction of this nice little Mac OSX application by Pete of Bleepshow. It does one job very well, namely show all the applications installed on your Mac in a single pane, displaying all their icons. You can also have it sorted (I use A-Z). It’s both rather handy for finding apps quickly, and also for browsing some of the lesser apps you didn’t necessarily know you had installed in OSX (particularly as a newish Mac user like myself). Well worth a look.
