Getting Skype on the Nokia N95 with Fring

I’m starting to experiment a bit more with what my Nokia N95 can do. I had installed Fring on my old phone a while back, but not really used it too much out of worries about cost. Fring is an instant messaging application for mobiles, which allows you to use MSN, GTalk, and most usefully of all, Skype on your mobile. Now over 3G, as I say, I was worried about cost, and also for Skype I found the quality a bit lacking. However as I can use a wifi connection on the N95, it comes into it’s own a bit more. I spend the majority of my time at home or at work, in range of a connection, so most of the time I can have it turned on, which is how you want to run it. And also on the bus into London from Oxford (which I seem to end up on about once a month on average), which I’m looking forwards to trying out. Nice little moneysaver potentially.

Quite easy to set up, and it picked up all my contacts from the account I had before. I was also pleased to see it now has twitter, so I can update my status on that too. Impressed with it thus far. And in general with the N95, for one I was encouraged to see that for my normal usage of a phone (i.e. not that much in terms of phone calls, but the odd bit of messing about here and there) the battery life is more respectable that I thought. One charge in two days, and I have been messing about with it a lot. I do get the impression it drains faster on wifi, and I haven’t starting using it as a media player yet (need to get a decent memory card first). So far, glad I made the switch from the 6300.

Very interesting but exactly how do I get Skype onto my phone? I went and tried to download Skype directly to my N95 but it started to download and then failed. I am in range of a wi-fi Modem most of the time and it would be very useful to be able to make calls using my Skype account. Thanks, Roger

Hi Roger, you can’t use a Skype-branded client on the N95 yet, but in Fring you can add your Skype account, and connect to IM or call them via your Wi-fi connection that way. I’ve done this over a slow 3G connection, and it worked (although not brilliantly) quite a while ago on my old Nokia phone, so it should be better on Wi-fi. In summary, just install Fring, then add Skype as one of the accounts.

    Hi Rajiv

Out of those options (although I couldn’t find KSA), I’d say using Fring was the best bet. You would be able to use a Skype account through it, and as long as you were able to use a Wifi connection, you could call across the Skype network. You can also call Fring users too.

In terms of phone, well I’m going to say the Nokia N95 as a user and fan of it, but any of the S60 Nokias that have Wifi would do the job.

    Hey,

I know this might sound weird, but I just got a N95, and live in the US. I downloaded Frig and ( I guess skype came with it.) Can I use the video call/ chat feature with the wifi and the camera?

Hi Tom, nope, I don’t believe you can use the video side of the phone with Fring, it is text and voice only.

Hi, just got the N95 8GB from http://www.allukphonedeals.co.uk/ and I want to use my copy of tomtom on it. Currently it’s on sd card for my XDA exec. Anyone know how to get it installed and working for my N95? I’ve read that it won’t work with the built in gps but i do have the bluetooth jobbie I used on the XDA.

    Hi Paul

I haven’t a need for a TomTom, so I haven’t looked into this for myself. I recently used Google Maps for navigation, and that was alright, but obviously it doesn’t do what TomTom can. Best suggestions I’ve read thus far are that 1) TomTom are supposed to be working on a fix for the N95 GPS and 2) The installation instructions I found in a thread on the Nokia Forums. Obviously I can’t vouch for them as I haven’t tried them, but I hope that helps.
